Being For A Day
Sometimes, we just need a "me day." A friend introduced me to this concept—taking a day solely for yourself. This day can be whatever brings you happiness and enjoyment.
I booked a weekday off to have a day entirely to myself, doing whatever I wanted. It was a chance to recharge and ground myself, a true "Carpe Diem" experience. Over the years, I’ve had many "me days," each one unique depending on how I feel and what I need at the time.
It doesn’t matter what you do or how you spend the day—the purpose is simply to enjoy life and the things you love. It’s about taking time to just be and doing whatever makes you happy. This will be different for each of us, but in my perspective, it’s not selfish—it's rather necessary. It allows you to connect with yourself, reflect, and celebrate who you are while doing what brings you joy. It’s a reminder that life is so full of opportunities and gifts, and it’s important to take time to stand still and appreciate them in your own company.
On my most recent "me day" (I need to come up with a new name for these), I started with breakfast at a favourite restaurant. Later that morning, I visited the Museum of Anthropology and walked through all the exhibits. I’ve been to this museum many times, but each visit offers something new, or I notice something differently.
As the sun unexpectedly came out, I decided to visit VanDusen Garden and stroll through its many different areas. Walking across the great lawn on my way to the stone garden, I noticed a landscaper mowing the grass, and the smell of fresh-cut grass on a sunny October day filled me with an incredible sense of well-being. The park was celebrating the fall harvest, so there were reminders and exhibits throughout the gardens recognizing the abundance of autumn.
Feeling hungry, I decided that the crisp, sunny fall weather called for a drive to White Rock. Although the tide was in, I still walked along the boardwalk and pier, listening to the waves and breathing in the ocean air. And of course, when you’re at the beach, fish and chips are in order. I sat at a patio table with an ocean view and enjoyed one of my favourite treats—cod and chips.
Driving home, I felt a great sense of satisfaction from a day well spent, and it was only 3 p.m. When I got home, I finally finished reading a book I had been meaning to complete for months. It was a great read—if you haven’t read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, I highly recommend it.
