Being a Voice
The world seems to have a lot of issues of late, and it is hard not to feel overwhelmed and unclear about what to focus on or care about. Often we find ourselves in a place of judgment and unsure of what can possibly be done as many of the issues are complicated, complex, and vast.
Last week I decided to express my thoughts and voice too many issues. I sat down and wrote almost 30 letters (which I had to email due to the postal labour dispute) about a variety of concerns. I wrote to municipal, provincial and federal governments, as well as some companies and stores. This is something I have not done for a long time - I reflected on why I had stopped making my voice heard.
Vancouver International Writers Festival was a few months ago - I attended a session called Finding Joy amid turmoil. It resonated with me - as 10 authors shared short stories of life experiences where they managed to find moments of joy despite the backdrop of obstacles or bleak situations.
My Daughter reminded me at Van Dusen this year - “Be the change you wish to see in the world” Gandhi (although some debate if he actually coined the phrase ). It’s the voice of one - the bravery to step forward, take the time to act and be the catalyst for change.
The concept of a single voice making change is not only inspiring but also a testament to the profound impact that one determined individual can have on society. Throughout history, there have been numerous instances where a single voice has sparked monumental shifts, igniting movements that resonate with countless others.
You cannot change it all - but you can be a single voice. Your voice will build and before you know it will become a movement and most importantly make change. We always have a choice on how we show up and our actions and choices.
These examples underscore that, while change often requires collective effort, it can begin with the courage of a single voice. Whether through acts of defiance, passionate advocacy, or raising awareness, individuals can inspire others to join in the struggle for justice and change.
Throughout history, the power of a unified voice has sparked significant change, demonstrating the profound impact that collective action can have on society. From civil rights movements to political revolutions, individuals have come together, often risking everything, to advocate for justice, equality, and progress.
One thing we cannot do is get discouraged, become indifferent, apathetic or overwhelmed. Gloria Steinem wrote a book years ago Revolution from Within, where she wrote about how small movements and choices can have a big impact, finding a space to make a small action. Much like small changes can be the beginning of new habits and big shifts personally.
What about you?
Where will you focus your voice?
What change do you want to see?
What steps can you take to advocate for what you believe and value?
