Being Amma

In May 2021, I became a grandmother to the most wonderful grandson, Elden. He may choose to call me whatever he wants — however with an Icelandic heritage Amma is the word for Grandma that I prefer. My eldest daughter Taylor and her spouse Tyler are not only remarkable people but amazing parents. To see your child create their own family is quite an experience, one that makes my heart full. Madison, my youngest, another remarkable person, is an aunt for the first time and she has taken on this new role with much gusto. It is clear that they already have a special bond.

I would not say that I have taken my family for granted ever, but lately, I have become really grateful for them. As I meet people, I have become aware that many families do not have the same unconditional support, nor help each other or enjoy spending time together. We show up for each other — successes, triumphs, bad news, good news, help when needed, support when required, new hobbies, new achievements, work, in sickness, in health and of course lots of laughter of each of our quirks and idiosyncrasies. If someone needs something, there are always offers of assistance and advice (lots of advice, haha).

My dad likes to watch my nephew play sports, my brother helps me with anything that requires a tool (or mechanical inclination), we babysit, attend concerts, celebrations, support family businesses/ventures. I always know that we can count on each other for whatever reason. This extends to my aunts, uncles and other extended family members. Everyone is connected regardless of the last time we got together. My family rallies and is there when they are needed which I am so appreciative of.

Elden may already have a sense, but he is so loved and supported and a welcomed addition to our clan. He has a very loving and supportive family on Tyler’s side which I have had the pleasure of meeting over the past year. One new baby in the world and now my family has expanded to include so many incredible people that I proudly call my family. I know it will continue to strengthen and grow over the next generation – that is our family’s gift and legacy.

How do you create family? What defines family for you?
