Being A Mentor

During my career, I have had the great fortune to have had many remarkable mentors. None of these relationships were formal mentorship arrangements.

Recently one of my first Managers (in my early 30s) and I got together for dinner. It was great to see her and it had been many years. Very quickly we caught up and I was able to tell her what an inspiring boss she was. I adopted many of her behviours that I still apply today.

Some of her lessons (which she didn’t even realize she was teaching) have now cascaded to dozens of people. Individuals that I have managed, have adopted the practices and built on them.

Mentors have been important to me, and as such, I have made mentorship an important part of my own practice. I have mentored many individuals both formally and informally.  Whenever the opportunity presents itself I sign up to be of service to others.

Good management and leadership needs to be shared and applied. See something, read something and learn something - apply it.

You never know how many people you will influence with your shift.

It was such an honour to have the opportunity to tell my manager at the beginning of my career how much she influenced me and to have the opportunity to thank her.

Do you have a mentor? Are you a mentor?

The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.
